A traveling queen: From Louisiana to Texas- Ms. Curvy USA 2013

I was looking for queens to interview for my blog and come across this lovely woman that I got the chance to meet in Texas in 2011 while competing for a different pageant system. I contacted her and asked her about her title and her pageant experience and asked her if she would liked to be a feature. I was inpressed with her community service with her charity and she is also the first queen to be featured from her pageant system.

1. What is your current title?
Ms. Curvy USA 2013

2. How did you feel when you were crowned?
It was an amazing experience, and do be surrounded by so many phenomenal women. I was also bittersweet because I competed against two of my close friends.

3. Do you have a platform or charity?
My platform was the North Texas Food Bank serving the needs of seniors,

4. How has being a title holder helped your charity/platform?
In the pageant system a lot of contestants use platforms such as AIDS awareness, Breast Cancer, and Juvenile Diabetes. While those are all are wonderful platforms, mine is one that goes unnoticed all the time which is starvation. Working with the North Texas Food Bank has educated me on the severity of the issue and how much we take for granted. Most think of starvation as those in 3rd world countries, but there are people here in the state of Texas that are starving every day.

5. What do you hope to gain by your participation in pageants?
I gained a greater sense of self, and a lot of new women that I can call sisters. Coming from a family of only 2 kids, I wasn’t used to being around a lot of women and bonding.

6. Is you family/partner supportive through your journey?
I have been blessed with a family that supports all of my endeavors, big or small. In 2011, when I competed in my first pageant, I had family to come in from Baton Rouge, LA, Houston and Killeen TX. I always win with family.

7. How do you feel about title holders who pose nude, semi-nude?
I believe that all things can be done in a tasteful manner.

8. What titles have you held?
Ms. North Dallas County Triplex 2011
Texas Plus America Cover Girl 2012
Ms. Curvy USA 2013

9. Has competing in pageants helped you grow as a person? as a woman? mother? how so?
Competing in pageants made me realize that importance of family and having positive role models in your life. It also allotted me the opportunity to make others that look like me feel better about themselves.

10. Do you watch "Toddlers and Tiaras"? How do you feel about children in pageants?
I’ve seen the show a time or two and I believe that level of children pageantry is extreme. I think at that age, they should be learning about healthy competition and good sportsmanship. A lot of those mothers use the girls to live out some dreams they weren’t able to fulfill and a child.

11. How do you feel about "pageant hopping", going from state to state within the same pageant system to compete?
I feel that those that pageant hop don’t understand what pageantry is about and is competing for the right reason. Unfortunately, everyone is not meant to be a queen.

12. What made you compete in your first pageant?
When I first heard about Miss Plus America, I still lived In Louisiana. I wanted to learn more about it but at the time I was in school and just didn’t have the time to put into it. After moving to Texas, the “pageant state”, a good friend of mine Andrea Sledge was directing her first pageant and talked to me about competing. At first I was apprehensive because I was over 30 and thought I was just trying to fulfill a childhood dream.  After talking to her and learning more about it, I was ready. I was blessed to compete and win my first title in 2011.
14. How long have you been competing?
I began in 2011

15. What was your first title?
Ms. North Dallas County Triplex

Big Girlz Runnit presents Miss Voluptuous

MVP 2013 delegates
We are only one week away from the 4th Annual Miss Voluptuous Pageant and I got to chance to chat with founder and owner of Big Girlz Runnit, Michelle Caldwell. I am glad to have known her and worked with her for almost 4 years. I am so proud to have been crowned the first Miss Voluptuous 2011. This organization is for the everyday plus size woman. The woman from all over, from the hood to the suburb, the single mother, the wife, young and "seasoned" women. This organization and the Miss Voluptuous Pageant system encourages all women of all walks of life to join. For me it was good to be a part of something where I could look to my left and look to my right and identify with them. Be sure to get your tickets to this year's Miss Voluptuous Pageant May 31 at 7p at the King arts complex in Columbus, Ohio.

1. What is the name of your organization? Your pageant system? The name of my organization is Big Girlz Runnit Inc. The name of my pageant system is The Miss Voluptuous Beauty Pageant.

mynesha hall MVP 2012
2. What sparked your interest in pageants? What sparked my interest in pageants was watching the Miss America Pageant on television, and getting angry looking at all of the contestants. All of them were small and petite. I got upset because these images on my tv screen were what society deemed as beautiful, and not one of them looked like the reflection I see in my mirror every morning.

3. What made you start your pageant? What made me start my pageant, was my husband witnessing my anger and frustration during the Miss America Pageant. I was complaining and yelling at the tv, saying "Why don't they have any big girls on that stage? They didn't even have a female with the average body type! This is why our young girls feel so insecure about themselves! I should have a plus size beauty pageant." My husband said to me, "Well, why don't you? What is stopping you?" That was the day that Big Girlz Runnit Inc was born.

Julianna Delise MVP 2013
4. When did you start your pageant? Our first Pageant was held on Saturday, May 21, 2011 in Columbus, Ohio

5.What does your pageant promote? Our pageant (and the BGR Inc. organization) promotes self love, self confidence, and societal awareness of the plus size community. We aim to erase "sizeism" (prejudice against overweight people)

6. What sets your pageant apart from other pageants out there? What makes BGR Inc. unique from other pageants, is that we try to relate to people from all walks of life. We have affordable fees to participate, which always fairs well with the public. We keep it real! No stuffiness and "fru fru" attitudes allowed. While we hold self-respect and class in the highest regard, we pride ourselves on being relatable, and real. The Miss Voluptuous Beauty Pageant is also different, because we welcome ladies who may need some help boosting their self esteem and confidence levels by showing them how to love and appreciate all their curves and edges, and re-assuring them that they are beautiful! If they don't love and appreciate their curves, then they certainly cant expect a love interest to do it. Love you first and the rest will follow.
The Caldwells

7. What do you hope to gain from this pageant? What I hope to gain from this pageant, is to help at least ONE person come to know herself, and identify herself as beautiful and worthy of everything life can bring. If what we are doing reaches at LEAST one person, then our job is done!

8. Being a director, have you ever competed in pageants? No, I have never competed in pageants. Not because I am afraid to. I have never competed in pageants because I am a "behind the scenes" type person. Not to mention, other than the Miss Plus America pageant, our pageant is the only one of its kind that is built around plus size women. Me competing would be conflict of interest.

9. How/where can people register to compete? Reistration is closed for this year, but for next year people can connect with us on our Facebook page BigGirlz Runnit-Inc or visit our website Biggirlzrunnit.com Registration opens every year on January 3.

10. What type of delegates are you looking for to represent your pageant? We are looking for women ages 18 and up who are no smaller than a size 14. We are interested in diversifying the pageant. BGR Inc. welcomes all races and ethnic backgrounds. We are not a "black only" organization.
Me, MVP 2011

11. What is your pageant’s motto? Hmm, that's a good question. We don't have a motto for the pageant per se, but BGR's motto is "I Put On For My Thickies" and "The Thicker The Berry, The Sweeter The Juice"

This week's queen is my first junior queen, Evyn Mills. I met Evyn in 2013 at a few fashion shows and was amazed at her talent and her presence. The Georgia Peach queen: Ms. Georgia Plus America 2013

I came across this beautiful queen's page on facebook from someone else's page and I was amazed by her charity work. I started following her work and then contacted her to interview her. Check out this week's southern belle.

1.What is your current title?  Ms. Georgia Plus America 2013

2. How did you feel when you were crowned?  I was overwhelmed with joy because I never thought I could be a beauty pageant winner at my full figured size. I’ve always had issues surrounding my weight and struggled to maintain what society told me was a normal size. My desperation to fit into society’s standards led me down a path of unhealthy practices that included both starvation and bulimia.
3. What does being miss, ms, mrs (fill in title) mean to you?  Being Ms. Georgia Plus America is an honor to me because it has provided me with the opportunity to be an advocate for not only the plus woman, but for all woman and young girls to remind them that there are no limits on beauty!

4. Do you have a platform or charity? My platform is Building Self-Esteem and Promoting a Healthy Body Image in Young Girls. I am partnered with the George Washington Carver Boys and Girls Club in Atlanta where I developed and manage a program called “Real Talk” aimed at showing girls how to build confidence.

5. How has being a title holder helped your charity/platform?  I have always considered myself to be a mentor and a role model.  My title allows me to touch the lives of even more young people through my platform.

6. What do you hope to gain by your participation in pageants? I initially entered pageants to build my confidence and improve in public speaking and I hope to continue to make improvements in these areas.

7. Is you family/partner supportive through your journey? Yes, they are my personal cheerleaders.

8. How do you feel about title holders who pose nude, semi-nude? It’s not something that I would consider doing but I would never impose on someone else’s right to make such a choice for themselves.

9. What titles have you held? Ms. Kansas City 1997, Ms. Georgia Plus America 2013

10. Has competing in pageants helped you grow as a person? as a woman? mother? how so? I am able to witness first hand just how strong I am. I never thought I would be able to stand before a large crowd of people, most of them strangers, and voice my thoughts and share my convictions!

11. Do you watch "Toddlers and Tiaras"? How do you feel about children in pageants? I have watched the show and I only have issue with children’s pageantry when it is unhealthy and upsetting to the child.

12. How do you feel about "pageant hopping", going from state to state within the same pageant system to compete?  Pageant hopping to me sounds much like crown chasing and I think this displays a lack of integrity and true purpose. I’ve always believed that a title should be an extension of the woman and a reflection of the great things she is doing in the community and the world around her.

13. What made you compete in your first pageant?  I was somewhat shy growing up and I decided that pageantry would be a great way to begin building my confidence.
14. How long have you been competing?  I entered my first pageant when I was 15 years old and have competed off and on since that time.

15. What was your first title? My first title was Ms. Kansas City for a small pageant system called Premier Productions. I had a great time and knew at that moment that pageantry would be a major part of my life.
